    - I was born in Toronto, Canada in 1993, and lived there until I moved to Rochester, New York when I was six.
    - As of now, I'm planning on majoring in Economics and Computer Science. I've also been interested in Psychology and Law, which I've pursued outside of the classroom through clubs, my fraternity, and research. I'm not sure about the type of job I want yet, but I plan on going to grad school after college.
    - Outside of academics, I've been interested in running/lifting, reading, playing guitar, and snowboarding. Recently, I've been trying to experience new things/push my confort zone by, joining clubs that I never would normally join (Ballroom Dancing).
    - My travel experiences are typically unique. I've been to China multiple times, including during the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

  2. My name is Rachel Nichols and I am a freshman working on a project entitled "Relationship of New Atrial Fibrillation to Coronary Heart Disease". I grew up about an hour away from Ann Arbor in Macomb, Michigan and attended Henry Ford II High School with about two thousand peers. I was the President of our National Honor Society chapter and the captain of both the sideline and competitive cheerleading teams. I intend on transferring to the College of Engineering and majoring in chemical engineering with a business or international minor. When I graduate, I would like to conduct research in a combined medical/engineering field. Aside from UROP, I am also the Philanthropy Fundraising Chair in the Zeta Tau Alpha Fraternity on campus. When I'm not studying, I enjoy snowboarding, running, and working out. As far as interesting experiences go, I have definitely had my fair share. For example, in October 2010, I was at the cider mill with some friends the day after I had gone to another school's homecoming dance. We were in the fudge shop, and I had walked over to watch the fudge being made through a small window. As soon as I had reached the window, an 8x4 thick wood sign fell and hit me in the head and I was knocked unconscious. I had a gash on my head and was taken to the hospital by ambulance. Thankfully, I didn't have to get stitches or staples but had to stay home from school for a few days to make sure I didn't have a concussion. I got a ton of free cider and donuts, actually a whole gift basket, and had an entertaining story to tell. The cider milll now has plastic signs.

  3. My name is Kaberi Keya and I am a freshman. I was born in Bangladesh and moved to Michigan when I was 6 years old. I grew up in Hamtramck, Michigan (a small town in Detroit) but moved to Warren at the end of junior year. I am currently undecided about my major but am looking into public health or social sciences. Since I started my freshman year, I have been changing my thoughts about my major over and over but still have not come to a conclusion. I am looking forward to what else there is I can do outside of the education life. I love to meet new people and go on adventures. I love to travel and go to new places. One of my life long goals is travel around the world. Summer of 2011 I traveled to India and was able to see the Taj Mahal and many other geographical locations that I have wanted to visit. The next place I want to travel to is Europe and visit all the countries. An interesting thing that I experienced is I got to ride a camel during my time in India and it was a funny experience because the owner of the camel wanted my dad to pay him 60 rupees (Indian money) versus my dad saying he will not give more than 40 rupees. After getting off the camel my sister and I ran into the tour bus and then my dad gave him the 40 rupees and ran on also. The owner of the camel began to run after the bus for more money.

  4. What's up fellow bloggers? I'm Mark. I was a resident of Long Island while I was in the womb, but my parents moved to Michigan before I was born so that I wouldn't inherit a New York accent. I spent my developmental years living in Grosse Pointe (a suburb outside of Detroit) and rather enjoyed my time there. I'm currently in Biophysics at the University of Michigan, a major that suits my interests well. I'm also minoring in music just for kicks. As for career aspirations, I would say that Graduate school is the next big thing that I will contend with and then I might move on to research. Medical School is a backup plan, just in case I find research absolutely intolerable.

I enjoy long walks on the beach, sunsets, sunrises, midnight, high noon, and most other times of day; but what I primarily do with my free time is music. It is the most relaxing and entertaining part of my day to play and listen to any type of audible media, with a focus on the weirder groups/composers of any genre.

Something that most people find interesting about me is my lucid dreaming experience. I have been an avid lucid dreamer for about 3 years now. Lucid dreaming is a phenomena wherein a person becomes aware that they are dreaming during a dream. This allows them to sieze control of their mental reigns and do whatever they choose within the dream; whether it be flying, teleportation, breathing under water, etc. It's a really incredible feeling and I highly recommend picking it up to anybody that has any interest.

    Until next time,
    Mark

    1. How did you first start lucid dreaming? Was it intentional or did it just happen on accident and you've done it ever since?

    2. It started accidentally, I used to have them as a kid, but as I got into it I started keeping a dream journal and they came more often.

This is a particularly helpful website if you're considering giving it a try

  5. My name is Alex Haase and I am from Plainwell Michigan. At this time, my intended major is learning towards computer science/engineering/med. I also work at a hazardous materials laboratory during the summer, and I am planning to continue my education after my time at the University of Michigan.
Outside of academics, I am interested in snowboarding, running, rollerblading, martial arts, and sleeping! Something interesting about myself is that I have practiced Taekwondo for around 11 years and have won many tournaments (I'm a black belt).

  6. My name is Nick and I'm a freshman here at the University of Michigan. I am from Traverse City, Michigan (the pinky) where I grew up for most of my life (though I was actually born in Ann Arbor). I am currently undecided as to what major I will pursue, however I am a pre-med student, so my major will probably end up being in a science. I enjoy learning about biology, anatomy and physiology, and psychology so at this point I think that I will most likely major in one of those areas. I aspire to go to medical school and become a doctor, so hopefully my major will compliment that. As far as hobbies go, I really like playing sports and traveling. I played tennis, basketball, and baseball in high school and plan on playing on a few intramural teams this semester. My family and I travel a lot and I really enjoy seeing the world. I guess the most interesting thing about me is that I have been to over twelve countries. This past summer my family and I went to Switzerland for a week and had an amazing time. I have also been to China, Japan, Thailand, Great Britain, and Jamaica to name a few places.

  7. Hello everyone! My name is Ejona (Yona) and I was born in Albania. I went to an artistic school and there I studied intensively music and violin for 10 years. My parents decided to move in Michigan about three years ago, and my sister and I had to follow them. Currently we live in Westland and there I attended the second part of my high school. I was my class' Vice President and I also participated in a lot of volunteering and other clubs. At the beginning, I didn't speak English,so I am still working on it,(you can tell from my awesome accent). What I like to do in my free time is reading, listening to all kinds of music (especially classical), watching movies, and the most important thing for me is spending time with family and friends. I am ambitious and hard working. One of my important goals was to be accepted at U-M and obviously I made it. Currently I am a freshman at the college of LSA and I am majoring in Neuroscience. My next career goal is to attend Medical school and become a Neurosurgeon. I do not like babies, animals, or sports. Some other things that I like are singing and dancing, but I am really bad at both and 10 years in a artistic school didn't help at all to improve my skills. It was really nice to read all the previous blogs and learn more about each of you.
    Have a Great Time, Yona.

  8. Hi All,

My name is Anjali Sarver, and I am a sophomore in LS&A. I was born and raised in Grand Blanc, MI until I was 10 years old. I then moved to India after I finished 4th grade and lived there through half of my junior year in high school (6.5 years). I moved back to Michigan and finished high school and graduated from The International Academy in Bloomfield Hills.

Coming into college, I was pretty sure that I wanted to major in Neuroscience, and I actually just declared my major in Neuroscience last week. I plan on applying to medical school next summer, with the hope of practicing orthopedic medicine in the future. My research project is called "Wiring the Functional Brain", and it has been very enjoyable up to this point. In my free time, I enjoy practicing yoga and working out. I also enjoy hiking, cooking, and watching movies.

Something unusual about me: I have a very specific way I like to eat apples.

  9. Hello fellow UROP-ers

My name is Will Schrier. I am 20 years old and I am from San Diego California. This is my sophomore year at The University of Michigan and I absolutely love it here!

Career goals: I am pursuing a duel major in EEB and PITE. I want to work in the fields of conservation and sustainability. I am greatly saddened by the way humanity has abused the world’s resources. I can truly say that I fear for the future for my kin and generations to come. I could talk about what I think is wrong with the world all day, but that is not to say that I don’t love the world. I think the world is beautiful and I love humankind’s ingenuity; I just hope that the latter can preserve the former.

Hobbies: I enjoy working out and playing pick up basketball. These physical activities help me to de-stress. When my body feels good, my mind feels good. I also really enjoy cooking (and eating for that matter). I have worked in the kitchens of restaurants since I was 15 years old. I like to mix and match flavors and spices and try weird combinations. Luckily for me, I have a very agreeable palate and I enjoy everything I eat. I usually enjoy what I make, sometimes I don’t but I always wonder if other people would think any of it was good.

Oddity: An unusual thing about me is that I sometimes undergo stints of insomnia where I won’t sleep for a couple days. The weird thing is that in the morning after those nights I don’t feel any more tired or rested than I do in the morning after the nights I do sleep.

  10. Hi everyone!

I am Keonia Ridley. I am a freshman at The University of Michigan considering a major in Women's Studies. I grew up in Highland Park, Michigan. Highland Park is a little city, about three miles wide, in the center of Detroit. At home I have three younger brothers, one older sister and a niece. They are the joys of my life!

When I was younger I would watch my grandmother cook. No matter if she was making oatmeal for me in the morning or making Christmas brunch, I would sit at the kitchen table and watch. I think that is where my love of baking stemmed from. My favorite thing to do is back cupcakes. It is amazing how creative can be baking and icing cupcakes. Even though I like to bake cupcakes, I am not planning on creating a career out of baking. As far as a career in the future, i don't know what I want to do. I am currently undecided of my future occupation. I have been thinking heavily about working with women and babies, possibly becoming an OB/GYN. If all else fails I'll open my own cupcake shop! (:

One interesting fact about myself that I love to share is in April of 2010 I had the honor to have lunch with Michelle Obama at the DIA in Detroit. It was an amazing honor to be in the presence of such a strong, empowering woman, let alone know she's the First Lady of the United States! So yes, I'm awesome!

I live my life day by day, smiling with intentions of uplifting others. There no greater feelings knowing you are part of the reason someone is enjoying life, or at least their day.
